Gertrude, the Pet of the Day
Name: Gertrude
Age: Unknown
Gender: Female
Kind: Pekin Duck
Home: Portland, Oregon, USA

I rescued Gertrude from a park where someone had abandoned her. She can't fly (the breed is too heavy to fly) and she injured her foot, so she was unable to walk. The other ducks were picking on her and she had big bald spots and open sores on the back of her neck. She was supposed to be white, but she was filthy.

She was very tame and let me pick her up and so I took her home to nurse her back to health. I put her in the bathtub, since I didn't know what else to do with a duck! She was obviously someone's abandoned pet, since she loves people and attention and is totally at home in the tub. Now I am in love with her! What a personality Gertrude has!

She is quite the attention-hog. Gertrude demands attention by quacking real loud until we go into the bathroom to see her. I learned what to feed her, and help her get strong. She still can't walk yet, but she is getting stronger every day! This photo is of her taking a bath with her own rubber duckies. She has won my heart.
