We
adopted Sunshine James (a.k.a. Sunny Jim) on Jan. 2, 2000. He was
only five months old and he was an absolutely adorable baby. At the pet
store, he climbed onto my husband's shoulder and refused to budge. He
was one of the few male cockatiels there, thereby making my husband
decide that Sunny was the one for us (our family is now composed of two
males and two females!).
Sunny thinks he is a human like us: he eats our food and wants to be
involved in everything we do. His favorite foods are cooked rice, bread,
and sunflower seeds (which only come from his "daddy"). He also loves
spaghetti and pizza, and, when he eats them, his face gets completely
covered with the sauce. Sunny is very attached to his "mommy." Although
he loves the other members of the family, she is his favorite, and he
can spend many hours staring up at her adoringly. He loves head-rubs,
but hates baths. Whoever said that cockatiels love baths obviously never
met Sunny. He manages to make us feel miserable after his weekly bath by
pouting and ignoring us for about three hours. Sunny is truly the center of
our lives. We are highly skilled at boring guests with tales of his
antics. He enjoys "talking on the phone" with his "daddy," and whenever
the telephone rings, he makes sure that we are aware of it by screaming
at us. Although he does not say "human words" that are discernable to
the average person, he can squawk in ways that let us know that he wants
a peanut, a treat, or that he thinks that we are "pretty birds."
