One
evening we went to the local pet store and visited the dwarf
hamsters while we were there. Right in the middle of a cage of eight or
so unkempt sleeping hamsters, stood a very tiny, perfectly groomed opal
hamster trying to gnaw on a seed half the size of his head. After which
he attempted to run on the wheel, falling through the bars at every
other step. As we watched, he was continually bullied by his other,
larger roommates. To make a long story short, he came home with us that
very night! Sport attached himself to us faster then we could believe
(i.e., in about three hours!). He loves to be held and to explore his
surroundings - but only when he feels like it. During the day he will
ignore your presence entirely (if he crawls out of bed at all) but at
night he always wants to be held. While being out, he will either
wander around aimlessly, taking in the sights and smells of his new
world, or simply fall asleep in the sleeves of our shirts. In fact, he
will fall asleep almost anywhere! He is quite unusual in many respects;
he will make new beds in his "apartment" at random and normally refuses
to take more than one bite of any treat you might offer. His favorite
treat seems to be strawberry yogurt drops - and even those he will often
refuse! But his quirks don't matter at all. He is always friendly and
he seems to love us very much!
