My
love for tortoises first began on holiday in Spain, when I found a
baby tortoise in the garden of the villa. This stimulated me to know
more, and so last Christmas Hannah entered my life. Hannah is an
Eastern Hermann's tortoise from Slovenia. I have had her for a year now,
and it has been great watching her grow. She is not big, only 8
centimeters, but what she lacks in size she makes up for in cuteness.
Some of my happiest moments are when I have fed her greens from my hand
(that shows how tame she is) and she opens her beaky jaw, and I can see
Hannah's tiny pink tongue waving in her mouth. I want to get rid of
the age-old notion that tortoises are slow, fat, lazy creatures, as
Hannah is very agile. She can climb up and over logs, and can move
quickly when fresh lettuce is at stake. Fat!! Hannah weighs 131 grams
and is officially slightly underweight. I cannot imagine last year,
when I did not have Hannah.
