Roscoe, the Pet of the Day
Name: Roscoe
Age: Five months old
Gender: Male
Kind: Hognose Snake
Home: Pasadena, California, USA

Hello, this is my Red-Phase Western Plains Hognose Snake. He was born in the summer of 2002 so he is still a baby (about five inches in length). This snake is sometimes called the "Puff Adder" for its habit of puffing up when threatened. It may also hiss loudly, hood like a cobra, and strike with a closed mouth (it never would bite in defense in captivity, and Roscoe never bites at all). If further annoyed, the snake will sometimes play dead with its tongue flapping out of its mouth. The act isn't too convincing because Roscoe will flip back over if turned back on his belly. The hognose is truly "the clown of the snake world" and is known for its interesting personality, and Roscoe fits that description perfectly. Roscoe is a sweetheart who never bites and is a joy to have as a pet; I enjoy his great character, curiosity and friendliness.
