Skittles
was the little grey rat in the glass fish tank with "Feeders"
on the glass. She was the one pawing on the glass, she was the first rat
I held, and the first rat I fell in love with. Skittles was odd compared
to her fellow friend Oreo. She had wild brushy hair and curly whiskers,
and she made the weirdest noises when she was happy. She was very cheery
and active. She was there to cheer you up, when you weren't feeling so
happy. When you would give her a treat, she'd sit there and nibble on
it - making chuckling noises. When I'd give her yogurt as a treat, she'd
get so into it, she'd get it all over her head, then she would have to
take a really long bath to make sure it was all off. A couple of days
after I bought her she had a litter of babies, which included Peanut
(that's Peanut on the left) - one of my five rats. She was a wonderful
mother, and a wonderful rat all together. She touched me so deep, and we
bonded like glue. A dog is a man's best friend, to me, a rat is a
woman's best friend. I realized that, on that warm clear-sky August
night in 2002 when she died in my arms, and traveled to Rattie Heaven.
No rat that I will ever own, will be as special and unique as my dear
friend Skittles.
