About Us
Lizzy, the Pet of the Day
Name: Lizzy
Age: Ten years old
Gender: Female
Kind: Desert Iguana
Home: Stanwood, Washington, USA

My name is Lizzy and I am a ten-year-old desert iguana. Please do not confuse me with the green iguana because I am very different. Green iguanas prefer a tropical environment and I prefer the desert. Our diets are also very different. I was rescued from a cage full of green iguanas and now I have lived in my new home for ten years. I am a lazy lizard but I do have a personality. I get up every morning at 7 a.m. to enjoy a breakfast of green leaf lettuce and every once in awhile crickets. I get my exercise by chasing the cricket around my cage and attacking it when I catch it. I have many hiding spots so I must look carefully. I also enjoy digging holes in my cave and sleeping on my hot rock.

I am only about 12 inches long. I used to be longer but a 20 pound cat got in my cage and had my tail for lunch. My parents were very concerned because I am their oldest pet and my tail did not look very good. But I am built to loose my tail in the event of an attack. This is my defense mechanism. I am also able to bloat my body and wedge myself in between rock. After the cat attack I have to now keep my bedroom door shut at all times, but my tail is growing back! I do get a lot of attention though because my tank is next to the computer.

Many people think lizards are boring pets because we do not do very much. Well, I think I am very interesting. I am always awake if someone is in my room and I love to come out of the cage and sit on the window to sun myself. I am a very friendly lizard and sometimes I just sit on my parents shoulder while they work.
