Cadence, the Pet of the Day
Name: Cadence
Age: Three years old
Gender: Female
Kind: Budgerigar
Home: Methuen, Massachusetts, USA

Cadence has been my companion since I got my first apartment. At the time, she was just a sweet little baby who hardly made a peep, and it was just me and her. Now, she's a very strong personality who likes to rule the roost - which includes me, my husband, and a cockatiel named Charlie who lets her walk all over him. :-)

Cadie begins each day by waiting for me to come downstairs to say good morning. When she hears me, she begins chirping eagerly. I go over to her cage, open the door, and she hops right out. I lean down and she showers me with kisses, sometimes for as long as ten minutes, if I'll let her! I keep her wings trimmed, so she has the run of the house -- but unless she's on my shoulder, she basically stays in the living room, where one wall is mirrored. She sure does enjoy playing with that beautiful bird in the mirror!

Every night, I sing her to sleep. The song I sing is "Goodnight, my someone" from The Music Man, except I sing "budgie" instead of "someone." One time, after I'd had her for a few months, I made the mistake of playing the Music Man CD mid-afternoon... when "her" song came on, was she ever mad! She clicked and clucked angrily, as if to say, "I am not going to sleep now!"

Besides kissing me and playing in the mirror, Cadie's favorite hobbies include climbing wherever she can, bathing (as evidenced by the degree of her wetness in the second picture, Cadie takes really good, long baths!), and having me blow on her till she's dry. She used to enjoy dive-bombing our cockatiel, Charlie, until we caught her in the act and "grounded" her - no more going in Charlie's house for you, little bird! But overall, Cadie is a sweet, loving little pet, and she has a way of making my day. I'm glad she's my little girl!
