This
is our parakeet, Azure-birdie. Actually he is the first pet
I ever owned, so he holds an extra-special spot in my heart. It
was so hard to choose from the many that were in the cage, so I
finally decided on the one with the purple nose. It didn't take
long to figure out that all baby parakeets have purple noses, and
that when they mature they either turn blue (males) or brown
(females).
I spent many, many hours with him, and after about six months he
finally tamed to my finger. I refused to trim his wings because
I love the way he bombs around the room, so it took a bit longer
and much more patience to tame him, but it was so worth the
effort. Soon after being tamed, he started imitating my voice
and saying the cutest things. "Goody Goody Gumdrops" "You wanna
come out?" "Yer sooo cute" "I love you" "Poor Birdie" "I'm
sorry little birdie" One of the funniest things he does is this:
he flies over and lands on the edge of my cup, dips his head
waaaay down, and proceeds to make the slurping sound when you are
drinking from a straw. Another funny thing is that when I put
his favorite Yanni CD on, he starts bobbing up and down, dancing
to the beat. He loves to climb up and sit on my lower lip, sit
on my shoulder while I type and imitate the sounds of the
keyboard, and be rubbed behind his ears, and take a bath in my
hands under the kitchen faucet. Azure is a very special bird,
and I hope you think so, too!
