Gender: Male
Kind: Black Throat Monitor
Home: New York City, New York, USA

Our pet is a Black Throat Monitor and his name is Tanzi, he is one year and five months old. It was a cold january monday evening. We were unpacking our boxes after two day weekend reptile show in White Plains, where we were vendors, selling all sorts of stuff, except live animals. As we were emptying box full of rubber reptiles toys, stacking them in on pile, one of them came to life. It was a baby monitor lizard. He was cold and looked very unhappy. He must have escaped from one of the vendors at night between shows and decided to hide in our box. He was so tiny, about eight inches long, must have just hatched. We already had two iguanas and red tail boa, but we immediately knew, we were going to keep this adventurous little guy. After all, out of hundred plus vendors, he chose us.

We knew it was a monitor, but we did not know much about them. So next day we bought a book on monitors and learned, that it was a black throat (varanus albigularis). We thought for about 30 minutes, how to name him and decided on "TANZI", after Tanzania, where they live. We tried to figure out if it was a boy or a girl, but could not. But, we would find out soon. About ten days later as he was walking around on a floor in our room, he suddenly started lifting his back and puffing his neck and bending his tail, acting like a macho man, telling us that this is his house now. Today, after almost a year and a half, he is four feet long and very happy and healthy kid. And every time we let him roam around our room, he still does same trick, only everything is much bigger now. And he loves to terrorize our cat. He also is a great soccer player. When we roll a small soccer ball towards him, he hits it better than any pro. That's our "TANZI." He is four months old in that picture.
