Maggie, the Pet of the Day
Name: Maggie
Age: Eighteen months old
Gender: Female
Kind: Greenwing Macaw
Home: Irvine, California, USA

This is Maggie, she is a Greenwing Macaw. She is the most wonderful companion anyone could ask for. She sleeps on a perch next to my bed, When the sun comes up she climbs down from her perch and walks up to my pillow and gently grabs my ear in her beak as she says, 'Hello, I love you'. What a great way to start the day.

Maggie was a gift from my son on my fiftieth birthday. I have always been a bird lover, having raised pigeons and peacocks as a youngster. So, here was this beautiful little baby Greenwing Macaw, whom was not fully feathered and having trouble holding itself upright. Having no idea of this gift, and was totally unprepared for, I had no place in which to keep her. She was in a large cardboard box for one night. The next night I did not have the heart to put her in there, not that it was small, it was a very large box. But, there was something special about her; so, I placed a baby blanket next to me on my bed and a pillow. She spent the next three months sleeping next to me; she would stay right on the pillow and never move. This is where she started pulling on my ear in the mornings. I was able during this time to purchase a large California Cage and a large perch, which is now next to my bed where she sleeps. I hand fed her for about ten months. I know they do not need this but she seemed to want and enjoy the feeding ritual, and I believe it also made sure she was getting the proper nourishment she needed. She is extremely gentle and affectionate. She loves to roll around, play tug-of-war with a sock or roll a ball across the floor. She loves to be held and cuddled. I believe there was a strong bonding between us as a result of all the time I have given her. She is like the happy little dog when its master walks back from being absent for only a short time. She whistles, says "Hi" and carries on every time I come home. And again, the greeting in the mornings is priceless to me. I love my Maggie very much.
