When
I bought Smoki, he was 250 pounds underweight and his feet were 3
inches too long. He had never had his mane cut and he had no idea what
English riding was all about. In the two years I owned him, I learned
more about horses, horse people and life than I ever expected
possible. Through the ups and downs, Smoki could always be depended
upon to be the calm, level headed one of our herd of two. He was very
gentle with young children and enjoyed most to be out on the trail. He
helped me win 2nd place in equitation, even though he did not seem to
enjoy showing or jumping much.
The best memory of Smoki I have is the day I was riding on the road
near our barn and two skidooers came up behind us. He stood and shook
as they went to pass by, but it was too much for him to handle. He
bolted down the road back to the barn as I bailed off into a snowbank.
When I reached the barn, he spotted me and walked over very slowly
with his head near his hooves, as if to say "I'm sorry, they were
very scary monsters." I sold him three years ago to a very sweet
little girl who loved him the day they met and he now spends his days
making her laugh ;)
