Tucker
may look big in this up-close photo, but she fits comfortably
in the palm of my hand, with room to spare. At first, she was very
skittish around people, but after a few weeks she got used to normal
pet-like affection.
Russian Tortoises are burrowing species, and she
naturally likes to dig herself temporary havens in the ground. This
can be quite amusing because the Georgia clay is hard but what's above
it (grass/ hay /pinestraw) is soft but hearty - she will dig far
enough down to get a good start but get stopped at the clay, often in
a nearly vertical position, which doesn't seem to phase her one bit!
