Coconut, the Pet of the Day
Name: Coconut
Age: Three years old
Gender: Female
Kind: Umbrella Cockatoo
Home: Elkhart, Indiana, USA

Coconut is a beautiful Umbrella Cockatoo who is part of our family, and I truly believe she was meant to be so. I have always loved birds and wanted a cockatoo for so long. In the summer someone told me of a person who had a Moluccan cockatoo at a good price. I followed up and purchased the bird. He was so beautiful, but had a split ring on his foot. At that time I didn't know that the split ring meant it was captured wild. I joined the bird club and talked to people who are very knowledgeable about birds. The bird bit me twice, the second time I ended up in the emergency room. How dearly I loved this bird, but I had to give it up to a breeding farm (finding out that it was wild and would never change). It hurt terribly to have to part with it. Then a miracle happened; I received a phone call from a bird club member asking if I would want Coconut (one of seven birds) she had too many. Needless to say I jumped at the offer. She is the most beautiful bird I have even seen with a charming personality that never ends. She knows that I am her owner, but she loves everyone. She plays with our miniature dachshund, Liebchen, they play tag and ball together. She asks to go to bed every night and knows many phrases. I would never have named her Coconut, but I didn't want to change or confuse her. I would have called her Precious or Angel, which to me she is my precious angel and I call her that when she cuddles up to me all the time.
