Penny, the Pet of the Day
Name: Penny
Age: Four and a half years old
Gender: Female
Kind: Guinea Pig
Home: Elk Grove Village, Illinois, USA

Introducing Penny the guinea pig! Penny is short for Penelope. Penny is four and a half years old. She will be five years old this August. We've had her since she was only three weeks old. She is a smooth-haired guinea pig. Penny lives with her loving family in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. Many children come to Penny's house for piano lessons and they all love to see her. When kids see how cute she is, they usually ask their parents if they too can get a guinea pig!

Penny is a very organized and particular piggie. She eats a slice of cucumber for breakfast, guinea trail mix in the mid-morning, a handful of timothy hay around lunchtime, a couple of baby carrots in the afternoon and a slice of green pepper for dinner. She gets a treat of another baby carrot or two at bedtime. She recognizes the sound of the refrigerator door opening and squeaks up a storm! And if someone is cutting up veggies, she automatically assumes they are for her! She enjoys other treats too, such as spinach, kale, cantaloupe and watermelon. She is very offended if you offer her a strawberry or piece of banana!

Guinea pigs enjoy some of kind of little extra shelter within their cage, so Penny has had a succession of shoe boxes. She ends up eating them until there isn't much left. Currently, she has a box from PlanetRx.com and it's big and square and this one has lasted longer. However, it's starting to tip over because there isn't as much left, so I think I'll have to place another PlanetRx.com order because Penny has really enjoyed this particular house! Another interesting fact - Penny prefers to have her cucumber slice turned for her as she eats. If you don't get her out to give her breakfast, she turns it for herself, eating the peel first, then the seeds out of the middle, then the rest! I know everyone would enjoy this very typical picture of Penny the Pig!
