This
is Charley! He's a raven that I rescued two summers ago after he
had fallen from the nest as a fledgling. After nursing him back to
health and bandaging his broken leg, it became apparent that Charley
would always have a turned-in claw and may not be able to fly. One
fine summer Sunday as Charley was hopping about the yard, a large dog
came lumbering down the road. Charley took one look at the dog and
soared above the tree-tops much to everyone's surprise and delight.
Maybe he just needed motivation. Charley is the neighborhood mascot
and much beloved member of our tiny community nestled within
the National Forest in the mountains of Prescott, Arizona. The small
picture shows him as he knocks on the window with his beak looking
for treats (his favorite is watermelon). Charley is never caged,
he lives among us because he chooses to; it's his home. We're all
hoping that he chooses to raise a family here, as friendly and as
much fun as my friend, Charley. The larger picture is a shot of
Charley at his favorite hiding place (the bird bath). He hides his
treats in there. And they say Ravens are smart? He buries his treats,
too and then forgets where he puts them...
