Sassy
is a wonderful horse who is an example of what love and a
little determination can do! My Fiancee' and I purchased Sassy at a
horse auction. But when we got her home we found that she was very
sick. Her hooves were filled with infection and maggots! She was in
so much pain all the time! She must have been left standing in filthy
conditions, for long periods of time, and her feet never cleaned as a
horses feet should be. In addition to the infection, her hooves had
been cut to fit into her shoes, instead of the shoes to fit her feet,
as it is normally done. Truthfully, being first time horse owners, we
had never taken care of a horse before, and had to learn quick, with
the help of our vet how to help her. We learned that a horses health
depends a lot on how healthy their feet are. And if something wasn't
done soon, she was going to lie down never to stand up again! For
months we went to the stable daily and cleaned and medicated her
hooves. Some days where better than others. But she still would
stumble and walk as if she were on eggshells. It was so hard to see
her like that - she would refuse to come out of her stall, and it
seemed like the life was just draining out of her. But with the
determination of my fiancee' and myself we kept going. We where not
about to give up... or let her give up either!
As time went on she got a little better every day. Then that
wonderful day came when it was time for her next farrier appointment,
to have her feet trimmed. The farrier then told us he saw no more
sign of infection! And after he trimmed and shaped her hooves that
day, it was then we saw for the first time... Sassy's spirit match
her beauty! Every day now, when we go to the stable and let her out
to play, she runs like the wind! She is so happy and it is a
wonderful feeling! Now Sassy cant wait to get out everyday, shes like
a little child waiting to go to the toy store! And every time I'm
cleaning her feet, and she turns to look at me, I can see "thank you"
shining in her eyes. I think Sassy should be awarded in honor of her
courage and her strength... Sometimes times are hard... we should
never give up. A little love goes a long way!
