Our
pet Iggy was a Christmas gift to my daughter, Beth. Unfortunately,
before we bought him we did not do enough research. We thought we had
found out a lot about owning iguanas as pets, but as we later found out,
we didn't know much at all! After we bought him we started doing a lot
of research on the internet and found out all the things we were doing
wrong and we basically had to start over on his cage and diet and
lighting. Now, three years later, he is an extremely healthy, happy
iguana. We took out my daughter's closet and built an addition onto it,
so Iggy has a 5' x 5' x 6' cage with UVB lights, heat lamps, humidity
control, basking branches and shelves, trees, hammocks and great
wallpaper so he feels happy and safe and he's getting just huge. He eats
a variety of fresh veggies and fruits only, no bugs, meat or dog food as
these are just awful for iguanas, despite what people have been told in
the past. Each week my daughter cuts up combinations of mustard greens,
collard greens, parsnips, green beans, squash, mangos, papayas, figs,
etc. Keeping an iguana is a lot of work and a lot of money, so if
someone is not willing to do the research and spend the time and money,
an iguana probably isn't the right pet for them. Iggy could grow to 6
feet in length and could live over 20 years. He loves to take a bath,
and sit on my daughters head and mess up her hair!
