I
have several pets, a big dog, two darling finches and some enormous
feeder fish, but the pet I admire the most is HAMPY, my hamster. He's
about 2 1/2, a male teddy bear hamster from Aloha, Oregon. Here's why:
Hampy is a retired kindergarten pet. He was named Hampy some years ago,
by an unknown kindergartener. He dutifully went about his work as a
classroom hamster, amongst the screaming, jostling, accidental drops,
grabbing, and other chaos, without complaint, or nibble of a single
tender kindergarten finger. Hampy had sleepovers on weekends, with
kindergarteners and their families, where he was sent off in a tiny wire
cage to witness the unknown terrors of the homes of each kindergartener
who's parent would allow him...I suppose that's where he got the
arthritis that has rendered his back legs immobile. Hampy also has a bad
eye, from an unknown incident, and a case of scurvy, which the doctors
remedied by ordering TANG as his preferred water bottle beverage.
(Incidentally, the doc said that most hamsters need a good consistent
source of vitamin C) All in all, Hampy is not a very healthy rodent. But
the tour of duty to which Hampy has selflessly dedicated his life,
prompts us to honor him in his last days, with dignity and respect. He's
in his golden retirement years, where his last days are spent without
kindergarteners. What more could a veteran kindergarten hamster want? In
my book he has the earned a purple heart!
