We
are John and Allison and live in San Diego, California. This is our
pied Cockatiel named "Benjie." Benjie is about two years old,
talks and whistles tunes. He likes to "nest" in the crook of
my arm every night for about a half hour prior to being put up for the
night. He loves go for rides in my pickup. Benjie is also potty-trained.
We also have a Goffin's cockatoo named "Velcro." "You
gotta love them birds!"
Benjie is the first bird in many years. We picked him up at a bird store
(Bird Crazy). They had about twenty tiels on a playpen in the store and
when I walked by Benjie jumped on me. I carried him around the store for
a few minutes and then put him back. The next time we passed by the
playpen he jumped on me again. My wife said he must want to go home with
us, so he did. He says, "Whatcha doin' Benjie?" "Ben
bird," "Baby bird" and he whistles a couple of tunes, one
of which he will start and wait for me to finish or if I start it he
will finish it. He'll play that game on and on. I know all the sad
stories about taking birds out of the house, but we keep his wings
clipped and he just loves to go. He rides in my pickup sitting on my
arm. Even shifting gears doesn't spook him, he just hangs on. If I go
into a store that he can't go into, he sits on my steering wheel until I
get back. (By the way, he is potty trained) We have a restaurant in the
neighborhood that has some outside tables, so Ben goes to breakfast with
us occasionally. He really gets into the scrambled eggs and pancakes. He
is real good about eating his fruit and veggies, much better than the
Goffins, but he is getting better, too.
