This
is "Shannon," a blue peahen, and her two babies that
were born this past June. They live in Southern New Jersey. The
babies names are Erin and Eamon. It takes about three months to tell
the "girls from the boys." The boy pea's have a longer tail
and start to get color on top of their heads. Their bird group is
know as Peafowl. Males are Peacocks, females are Peahens, and babies
are Peachicks. It takes two years for the male to have a long
colorful tail. Shannon will hopefully be a around a long time -
peafowl can live for 15-20 years. The loud noise that you hear from
the peacocks is a mating call. The season last from May to
June....then you hardly ever hear them until the next season. They
are not long distance flyers, but can fly very high to get to a perch
or in a tree. They eat special peafowl feed, but Shannon also likes
lettuce, tomatoes, marshmallows, raw eggs, and dog food.
