This
is a picture of Skuttle. He is our seven-month-old black-tailed
prairie dog. We bought him while vacationing in South Carolina in May
1999. It took us two days to drive back to Buffalo, New York where we
live. Skuttle enjoyed the car ride and spending the night in a
hotel! He now lives in a two story condo and loves to climb to the
top and chew on the bars. He has lots of things to play with but
would rather follow his mommy around the house instead. While she
does work on the computer, he sleeps on her lap. Skuttle likes to eat
a lot of hay, but loves treats! He has two beds in his condo. One is
made out of hay and is a round ball. He climbs inside and sticks his
head out. His other bed is a tissue box that was meant to hold his
hay. Skuttle decided it was much more comfortable to sleep in. When
the weather is warm, Skuttle takes us out for a walk in the yard. He
is always on his leash and is a little scared of loud noises or
birds. We have a pear tree in the yard and Skuttle loves to wrestle
with the pears! He spends more time rolling it around, than actually
eating it.
Although we have only had Skuttle for six months, we have learned a
lot from him. He is a very affectionate, loving and loyal pet. When
his cage door is opened, he will jump into our arms and smother us
with kisses. He also loves to pat our faces and when he sleeps with
us, will sleep with his little paws stretched out as if giving a hug.
He is the most important individual in our family. He has his very
own personality and loves getting attention, as well as giving
it. When we come home from work, there he is waiting for us at his
cage door. He lets us know that he has missed us all day long.
Everyday we see something new in him, or something cuter than the day
before. He is always changing and growing. Skuttle has given us a lot
of laughter and smiles. He has taught us the joy of having a pet, and
what it means to love unconditionally. Not only do we realize how
much we love him, but how much he loves us as well.
