Max
is a Mediterranean tortoise. His species is found throughout
southern and southeastern Europe. Although this species of tortoise
can no longer be legally imported, many hobbyists here in the US
regularly breed Mediterranean tortoises. Max is currently seven
inches and his maximum size will be between eight and ten inches. He
is a strict herbivore, eating only calcium rich greens and occasional
fruits. His color is striking when viewed in the open, but it does
much to camouflage him in his native, scrubland habitat. All in all,
he's a pretty active tortoise. He will hibernate in winter if given
the chance. Tortoises live a very long time if cared for properly and
I expect Max will be with me for many years to come.
