What
makes Romeo special? About three years ago I met Romeo while
helping a friend transfer him from the local race track, where he had
been working as a pony horse, to a boarding stable out of town. His
owner believed that he was too difficult for most people to ride, and
since Romeo's regular rider had moved away, he was of no use. I did
not own a horse and was just learning to ride. I kept track of him in
his new home, and was saddened when I could see that no one but me
was paying him any attention. I inquired about riding him, but was
told that he was too hard to handle for a beginner like me. Still, I
kept paying him attention and we bonded after a short time. I
continued asking if I could try riding him, but was always told to
just leave him alone for my own good.
One day, when there was no one else around the stables, and
determined to give this beautiful animal a chance, I placed a saddle
on his back and took him for a ride. He was fast, he was strong, and
he could turn on a dime, but not once did he show any signs of bad
temper or try to get me off his back. I'm convinced to this day that
Romeo knew that I could be his last chance. Near the end of our ride,
his owner saw us together. She was surprised not only that I was able
to ride him, but at how well we seemed to perform together. We've
been together ever since. (and it's going to stay that way). Romeo is
full of personality, and definitely has a mind of his own. He's bold,
likes to take charge, and can be exceptionally stubborn. On the other
hand, he's got a huge heart, will do anything for a handful of oats
or a carrot, and can be very patient when I need him to be. He has
taught me how to ride, and drive, and to care for him. He has touched
my soul.
