This
is Peaches, my hairless dumbo rat. She lives in a large ferret
cage with three fully furred female rats. She was tame from the day I
brought her home from the pet store, unlike most pet store rats who
are very nervous. A few days after I got Peaches I had a little
scare, I had forgotten to close the rat cage properly and Peaches had
gotten out. I looked all over the cage for her and she was nowhere to
be found. That night I went out to see a movie and I put a piece of
cracker in every room. When I came home the piece of cracker in the
kitchen was gone, to tell you the truth I thought I was seeing
things, I feared Peaches was dead. A little later that night I heard
noises in the kitchen and I went to investigate, I saw Peaches
running through a crack to the back of the fridge. I went in the
kitchen and I called her name a few times, being the friendly,
inquisitive rat that she is she came right up to me.
Peaches gets along well with her cagemates. She likes to eat yogurt
drops, popcorn and apples but her favorite treat is chocolate. She
gets a little sliver of chocolate when she's done a trick properly.
Chocolate is not toxic to rats like it is with other animals.
Why do I love rats? Domestic rats are smart, friendly and clean
animals. Most people think that rats are dirty and nippy but these
people are absolutely wrong. I don't think I will ever be without a
pet rat or two again.
