About Us
Miles, the Pet of the Day
Name: Miles
Age: Twenty years old
Gender: Male
Kind: Standardbred Horse
Home: East Tamaki, South Auckland, New Zealand

His name is Milestone Ace (Miles). This photo was taken about four or five years ago. He is now 20 years old. He is a Standardbred with a lovely temperament. He is now in semi-retirement and is still ridden by a 12-year-old, Natasha. She has been looking after him for the past two years but before that her sister Sarah rode him. Officially he is my horse but these days I think he is more Tasha's. I myself rode him for six years and had a lot of fun with him.

Miles is special because he is my best friend. He was the only horse I ever wanted and he will do things for me that he will not do for others - I can get him into water when for others, he will rear up and protest. He has a great personality. When he is told off he puts his head down almost to the ground and sulks until he get a hug.

He understands everything that is said to him and snorts appropriately in reply. I used to hide carrots in my pockets with a little showing and he would find them one by one without biting or getting your clothes. He will also take carrots out of your mouth. Usually 20 years is considered old but he is 20 now and still very healthy and still thinks he is young. Sometimes he acts like a two-year-old cantering round the paddock and rounds up the young horses to play. He grazes on a stud farm so there are a lot of young horses. The vet said he could live til he is 30 or more as he is well cared for.

When Tash was only learning as a ten-year-old, she fell off while doing a jump he realized that he was going to stand on her so he wouldn't put his hoof down until she was safely standing he put his hoof down and gave her a nudge as if to say he was sorry. Another thing is unless she is sitting on him comfortably and safely he will not move. It is even possible to do round the world without him going anywhere. Miles had won lots of ribbons and medals and trophies. Trotting races and best pairs are his specialty. He loves games days and ribbon days. In two ribbon days he won got either a first, second or third in every event. He loves food. If you gave him a carrot he would be your friend. Miles is loved by everyone. There is something about him that even people who are not normally horse people fall for him. There is so much to tell about Miles. He is a special horse.
