Derrick
is a sweet little newt who has brought joy and entertainment
to my home. You might not expect this from an amphibian, but he has
a lot of personality. Derrick spends his days lounging around on
plants and rocks, swimming, and climbing the side of his aquarium.
It's always fun to watch his bright orange belly as he stretches his
legs or uses his tail to hang upside-down from a plant. When Derrick
wants to be fed, he crawls into a corner and stands on his hind legs
looking at me with big eyes. I call the this expression 'newt
puppy-dog eyes.'
My cat has also enjoyed having Derrick around the house. She spent
months trying to find a way to sneak her paw into the aquarium before
discovering she could have just as much fun teasing him from the
outside. He'll chase after anything that moves, and she just loves
making him follow her paw.
