Clifford
is almost one year old! He has come a long way! We found
Clifford abandoned in the pasture across the road from our farm when
he was approximately two weeks old and very sick! He could barely
stand up and support himself.
We called the cattle rancher to tell him about his calf and he said
that he couldn't afford to take care of him and that the calf might
not survive anyway. He then told us if we wanted to try to save the
calf that we could. He also said that if the calf made it that we
could keep him. So Clifford was named and was now a part of our
family!
For the next six months Clifford was hand fed with a syringe at least
six times daily and lived in our front yard! (our dogs were not happy
with this!) He then moved onto horse feed and migrated out to the
pasture to live with the horses.
Clifford is now approximately 600 pounds and doing quite well. He is
not your normal Steer. Most cattle don't respond to their name (most
don't have a name), most cattle won't try to sit in your lap to be
groomed and most don't usually get a chance like Clifford
did.
I should tell you that we are not cattle ranchers or for that matter
have ever been around much of any cattle. Living in Texas you always
see cattle almost everywhere you go. Some are taken care of and some
make you question humans place here on earth. I feel lucky that we
found Clifford and were able to give him a chance. I hope we can save
more! p.s. Just in case you're wondering Clifford will never ever go
to market!
