Hi,
this is Bucky. Bucky is an African grey (timneh) parrot. He is
about four years old and was hatched in Madison Wisconsin. As a baby
he was handfed by the late Jo Terzich, who was the beloved Bird Lady
of Madison. While there, he was a featured baby in the newsletter of
the local bird club, MACAW (Madison Area Cagebird Association of
Wisconsin).
Bucky lived in Madison for four years or so, then when I got married
and moved to California, Bucky moved with me, along with his
roommates Tuka the Senegal parrot and the two cats Baby and Daphne.
He spent four days travelling cross-country, staying in bird-friendly
motels at night. Bucky has a vocabulary of about 50-60 words and
phrases, but his favorite is imitating the telephone dial beeps,
saying "hello," having a garbled conversation then
"hanging up" with "Ok bye," then a click. He
loves his pellets, fresh fruit, veggies and relaxing on top of his
cage when the dog is outside. If he is out of his cage and can't see
me, he'll hop down and go looking for me, leaving a trail of poop
everywhere he goes, so I have to keep a sharp eye on him. By the way,
Bucky is named after University of Wisconsin mascot Bucky Badger! GO
BADGERS!
It's not hard to find bird-friendly motels (or at least tolerant
ones). I did a motel search through Travelocity.com and did a
qualified search. For the record, most La Quinta Inns and Red Roof
Inns accept pets (though you should book with the hotel directly and
double-check, don't book through their 800 numbers).
