Llamas
are a member of the camelid family and are native to South
America. An adult llama can carry 60-80 pounds 8-20 miles per day.
Although they do spit at each other, they seldom spit on people, in
fact they really only spit when irritated.
I feed Fernando and Lorenzo once a day, and they graze all day. I
will have to do some "shearing" of their coat as the
weather gets warm. They need shots once a year, but the vet does that.
I brush them at least once a day. We live on a small farm in Southern
New Jersey.
When Fernando and Lorenzo are happy they "hum" and raise
their tails. Both like to eat treats out of your hand. On Sunday they
are harnessed and walked through the local park where they interact
with the kids in the park. The walks are good for their toe nails as
the hard road keeps their nails trimmed. As a rule, llamas do not
like to be touched, but these two guys love it. They are sweet, clean
and lovable animals and a joy to have.
