Jack
is a very special horse. He was born and raised here in the
state of Alaska. I have owned him since he was three years old and he has
proven to be one of the best horses I know.
For the last six years he has helped Challenged Youth and Adults how to
ride. He has been used in 4-H by my godson and has helped many kids
get over their fear of horses and learn how to ride. Jack is also a
wonderful driving horse, as his ribbons show. He also helped out in a
wedding by gracefully delivering the bride to the groom in pouring
down rain.
We live just outside of Wasilla, Alaska, about 60 miles north of
Anchorage. He gets one heck of a furry coat on him during the winter.
As a matter of fact, he's got a good start on it now!
He usually goes barefoot in the winter but this year I hope to drive
him more, so he will get ice shoes. These have borium "nubs" put on
the bottom for traction. As for feeding, we give them a lot more hay.
We can get cold snaps of -20° F or colder. We put blankets on them and
feed them hay 24 hours a day until it warms up. We also give them a
warm mash of alfalfa cubes to help them stay warm. I am also prone to
bake homemade corn bread for them and put molasses over it as a
treat.
