Oh gosh, please don't blame yourself. I'm in tears here remembering a painful experience of my own. I will tell you about it so I hope you understand it can happen to anybody.
I was a sophomore in high school and my neighbors had two beautiful Golden Retrievers named Amy and Abby. Amy was blind and Abby was her support. They were littermates and had been together their whole lives and loved each other SO much. My neighbors had me watch the dogs for 3 weeks while they were in Russia. Everything went fine for the first 2 weeks, then one morning I let them out into the backyard then went back to my house. In the afternoon when I went to go put them back in the house, Abby would not get up. I called and called to her but was too afraid to go up near her because I feared she was dead. I ran and got my parents and it turns out I was right. She died of old age from what the vet said. Well after that Amy wouldn't eat, sleep, or move. She just layed there and whined. I had to take her to the emergency vet where they eventually had to put her to sleep. This is so painful to bring up again and I blamed myself for the longest time. But I realize that there was nothing I could have done to prevent it. At least they are together at Rainbow Bridge now.
And Jojo is up at Rainbow Bridge too. Be at peace knowing that. I know its hard not to blame yourself, but try not to.
Hope you feel better soon.
