About two weeks ago my friend Sue called me all excited saying that she had adopted a dog from the pound. Two days after adopting her she called me saying that Nina was sick. I was worried because the symptoms sounded so similar to what Dewey had. She took Nina to the vet and was told that it was a bad case of kennel cough and sent with antibiotics. Nina didn't get better, she went back to the vet and they tested her for tick fever and valley fever, both came back negative. They put her on some stronger antibiotics. Last night Sue called me saying that Nina was drooling and her eyes looked crazy, she was taken to the emergency vet. The vets believed she had distemper. They took Nina home last night with some more medicine. Sue stayed up with her all night, she said that this morning Nina was even worse so she knew what she had to do.
RIP Nina your time here was short, you only had your family for two weeks but they loved you very much. Please say hi to Dewey for me, his life was much like yours.
What worries me is that it was several months ago when I adopted Dewey from the shelter and they failed to ignore that he had distemper. They helped me with my vet bills but I don't think anything else was done at the shelter. In the last few months I wonder if there were more dogs adopted out with this disease. Sue's vet is going to call to make sure that this time some form of action is taken. I really hope that what happened with Dewey and what happened with Nina were two isloated incidents. I know how hard it was for me, and how hard it is for Sue. I hope no one else has to suffer through losing a new family member.
