I am not an expert, but from my experiance Retrievers do not have white chests. I belive you may be mistaken for another breed, such as the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, for examples of this breed see the pics below.
Actually, Golden Retrievers can have white chests, although it is not recognized by the AKC.
