This is going to sound foolish...

I am a starving student and can't afford to take my dog (Kimo) for grooming on a regular basis. He is a chow mix with a very chow coat. I brush him often but his tail gets matted very quickly and I was wondering if it would be harmful to give him a conditioning treatment... with human conditioner? Should I just brush him every evening instead of every few days?

NEVER user human shampoos and conditioners on your dog! They are very harmful to the PH balance of your dogs skin.

If you want to use a conditioner, purchase a dog conditioner and dilute it to make it go further. There are some that are not that expensive and last a long time. Personally, I think brushing whenever necessary is a good solution. I brush my Dusty (he has a very full and plummy tail) about every other day.

Candy knows best!! I can only say that I agree! Using a good doggie conditioner, and keeping up with the brushing will help a lot!! Hugs to your baby! Pics???????
