Eating like a pig but losing weight....

My parents cat Scooter has been losing weight, yet he has a very healthy appetite, drinks a fair amount of water, is active, playful, and purrs non stop when you pet him.

So basically everything is normal except for the rapid weight loss (His bones are starting to show).

My mom wormed him and his kitty brothers and he's scheduled to see the vet. We're just baffled.

I've researched Kitty Diabetes, but none of the other symptoms fit.

And Fatty Liver Syndrom is caused by anorexic cats, which he's not.

    Any ideas?

    Scooter sends kisses.

I'm glad he's scheduled to see the vet, Kimmy. Rapid unexplained weight loss, among other things, could be a thryroid problem or could mean kidney problems. Both are treatable but not necessarily cureable. How old is Scooter? He sure is a fluffster. Oh, and a blood test could reveal either of these problems.

    Best I can guess, he's about 6.

Thanks for the info Debbie. He is quite the fluffster.

Losing weight in spite of eating a lot signals diabetes to me. They are 2 of the major symptoms of that disease. Also drinking a lot and peeing a lot (often missing the litter box due to the urgent need to go)

    Keep us updated.

I can't add anything to what has been said, but please let us know what the vet says.

Prayers on the way for Scooter and that his vet visit goes well. Rapid weight loss is definitely a concern, so I'm glad he's scheduled for an appointment. My mom and dad's cat Socks, lost a lot of weight and was drinking a ton of water when he was first diagnosed with diabetes. This weight loss could be coming from a variety of reasons, so I just hope that it's nothing serious! Do let us know what happens with his visit.

    He's gorgeous, BTW!

    **hugs**

Any uppydates on Scooter? Did he see the vet yet? Of course, if they took blood tests it'll probably be a day or two before you get the results.....

Kuhio lost weight rapidly herself. But she was 17 when the symptoms showed up. Her thyroid had gone into hyperdrive causing her to lose weight no matter how much she ate. It also caused her to throw up a lot because her system was running much too quickly.

    Medication helped quite a bit.
Please keep us posted on Scooter.
Ask your vet about microchipping. ~ It could have saved Kuhio's life.
