Paxil's biopsy results...

Paxil's results are in. The lump was a mast cell tumor. The specialist who did the testing says that there 90% clean margins, which given the location of the tumor is pretty good! Paxil's vet says that there isn't much else to do for her. There is a possibilty that more tumors will grow in other areas of her body and a fairly good chance that one will regrow at the surgery site. However, there's no way to prevent that or even know if it will happen. Apparenlty, huskies don't often get this kind of cancer. It is very common in boxer and bully-type breeds so most of the info out there is based on them. My vet thinks that Paxil has a good chance of living a close to normal life span. I have to watch her for lumps and bumps and get anything new checked out right away.

I'm so glad Paxil's aren't bad. Keep an eye on them, though.

That's how I lost my Rhodesian Ridgeback Thandi. She had two (maybe even more, we only biopied 2), but one on the spine, and the vet was wanting to take them out, as well as a full centimeter around it, which would have left a hole at least the size of a man's fist! Then they would do radiation, etc. We decided not to put her through that, she was already nearly 11 years old. She lived another very happy-chasing-bunny years, thanks to benedryl and cemetidine. They almost quadrupled in size overnight, and within 2 days she could not walk properly. That's when we had to say goodbye.

As indicated in the other thread your best chance is to follow up with local radiation to clean up the margins. Radiation has the best outcome against Stage I-II MCTs. Ask your Vet about it, and possibly ask for a referral.

Start supplementing the diet with fish oil 2000-4000 mg 2X daily. If the stool becomes soft then cut back on the dosage a little. Most puppies like the taste of fish oil gel caps. Fish oil as an anti-inflamatory also helps with joint problems.

Another supplement you might wish to purchase is Artemisinin. It like the Omega-3s in the fish oil will act as an anti-angiogenic agent which in effect will slow down metastasis.

If the MCT spreads it could reoccur locally or in the spleen, liver, or GI tract- as the major target organs. Symptoms may include skin rash and edema, digestive upsets, loss of weight, and lethargy.

Treatment with Vincristine, and Prednisone will give short remissions. Acid blockers to protect against the ulcerations of the stomach caused by histamine release should be used. Also anti-histamines have been shown to help give symptom relief to the MCT dog, and help slow down metastasis.

I'm so glad to hear this.

I was just thinking about Paxil today and wondering if you had gotten results back yet. I'm sorry I missed this. I hope Paxil is feeling well today.
