Show Dog Attacked, Killed By Canine Competitors
Two Irish Wolfhounds Attack Small Schipperke

CHICAGO -- A Wisconsin woman's show dog was killed by another canine competitor at the Elgin Kennel Club's annual dog show.

Three-year-old Kody was attacked by two Irish wolfhounds. One hound gripped Kody in its huge jaws, injuring the diminutive dog so much he had to be euthanized.

Kody was a schipperke, a breed that weighs 12 to 18 pounds. By contrast, an Irish wolfhound can weigh more than 100 pounds.

The American Kennel Club said it has never heard of a dog killing another at a show.

The AKC and the Elgin club are investigating. Kody's owner -- Barbara Koeppen of New Berlin, Wisc. -- said she'll wait to see what the kennel club finds before deciding what she'll do next.

The show was Aug. 21 and 22.

    Poor little dog.

As the owner of small dogs with big attitudes, this is an example of why I am VERY careful of taking my dogs around big dogs. I'm sure the vast majority of big dogs would not do something like this, and are complete sweethearts ... but it only takes ONE time, and your little dog is dead.

"We give dogs the time we can spare, the space we can spare and the love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made" - M. Facklam

"We are raised to honor all the wrong explorers and discoverers - thieves planting flags, murderers carrying crosses. Let us at last praise the colonizers of dreams."- P.S. Beagle

"All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king." - J.R.R. Tolkien
