Somewhere I read that a good way to help monitor pets' interactions with the Christmas tree is to hang bells on the lower branches. That way, when your cat or dog gets under the tree, the bells ring and you know what is going on. We have tried this, and it does help. The cats approach the tree to play with the "forbidden cat toys", the bell rings, we come and find the spray bottle. (I don't think we have actually had to spray anyone since the first day. The thought of it is enough for them.) Just wanted to share since this has worked well for us.
P.S. I may be repeating something that I read on this board, but I did a search and couldn't locate it.
