Technical/Picture/avatar questions

Ok, I'm new, the forum that I posted in the past didn't have all of these neat, beautiful pictures of pets. I'm a real novice on the computer. What is avatar? Are these pictures of your pets or are they images that you have found and customized? are they digital pictures that you have taken? How do you do it. They look great! Is there a site I can go to to do this? Sorry, my computer experience is limited.
