    Greyhounds found dead in Ohio

This is a terrible report that was on the Toledo, Ohio news program at noon today. They actually showed pictures of these poor dogs. I was eating my lunch and had to look immediately away to keep things down. How could anyone do something so disgusting???? There is a Team Greyhound place in Toledo so there is no reason that something like this should have happened. I just hope they find whoever did this - but the newsreporter said that this was just considered a misdeamenor. JUST A MISDEMENOR - it is an outrage and should be considered a felony as far as I am concerned. With pictures and further description of how these dogs were found, it was heartbreaking to say the least. And we say we are human.

HASKINS -- The Wood County sheriff is investigating a gruesome case of animal mutilation.

The bodies of about a dozen greyhounds were found along railroad tracks in northern Wood County Thursday night.

Fred Pine, a volunteer for Team Greyhound, was notified of the heinous crime and then he notified the sheriffs department. The dogs were skinned and had their ears removed to make it impossible to track their origin.

Team Greyhound is a rescue agency for the breed because they are frequently disposed of in this manner.

If you have any information on this crime contact the Wood County sheriffs department at (419)243-3441. All tips will be kept anonymous.

    4 Dog Mother,

If they consider(under present law) the killing & mutilation of these poor dogs a misdemeanor, I wonder how hard they will
work to catch those who did it? Read about a case in N.Y
    (also considered a misdemeanor there).

Woman who beat dog to death gets probation

    April 16, 2003, 9:13 PM EDT

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (AP) _ A woman who admitted beating the family dog to death after an argument with her husband received three years probation.

Donna Pfeiffer, 39, of Wappinger, was sentenced Tuesday in Dutchess County Court to killing Barnaby, a long-haired dachshund, who died on Oct. 30 from a skull fracture and internal injuries.

"I apologize to my kids, my family," Pfeiffer said at the sentencing.

Pfeiffer pleaded guilty last month to torturing and injuring an animal, a misdemeanor of the state Agriculture and Markets Law.

I can't imagine beating my dogs after fighting with my husband. I would be more likely to hit him.

My dogs are the ones who are always there to comfort me.

A friend from the dog park has a retired greyhound from Team Greyhound. Abbey is such a sweet gentle dog. I just can't understand why someone would dispose of these dogs in this manner.

That is so nasty. People like that make me hate the human race. Wait- they aren't humans they are beasts. I hate animal abusers, I think they all should burn. They are so s****y as to pick on a poor animal who doesn't know any better. I am happy though that those dogs are in a better place. This is very common though with the Greyhound. I was watching the news and they did a 1 hour report on greyhound farms. This is what they found/reported about:

(Read at own risk-Not very detailed, just really sad)

Many retired Greyhound racers go to Greyhound retriement farms where they are crammed in to cages way too small for them, never fed, and many are barried alive to make room for new arrivals. Police broke in on a retirement farm somewhere down south, and found Greyhounds with missing limbs in the cages...they were hungry...., all the Greyhounds were emaciated (sp?), and they discovered a mound in the ground which was full of skeletons of Greyhound puppies around 6 months old and adults. There were about 25 total. Greyhound specialists and the police said this is extremely common, and this is the fate of a lot of greyhound retirees. The ones who make it to speical rescue groups are extremely lucky. They showed all the footage on TV.

    4 Dog Mom,

From what I've read on Greyhound Rescue sites, the WHY is
so the dogs cannot be traced back to owners/racetracks through
    ear or body tattoos.

I am totally speechless!! My nephew and his wife have 2 beautiful rescue greyhounds. How anyone can do that to a poor innocent animal makes me sick!

And I can't believe that it is a misdemeanor! I thought that animal abuse is a felony. The laws need to be changed and FAST!!!

This brings tears to my eyes. I just see my beloved Shaianne.
But unfortunately this type of disposal of greyhounds is common place. Not right but people that do this kind of thing, don't care.
When I got Shaianne, I researched alot on greyhound treatment. And this kind of behaivor/animal cruelty happens all over the states. A lot of times they will find greyhounds abandoned in cages in barns in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the desert. Or will muzzle them or tie them together and let them out in the middle of the desert to fend for themselves.
If people realized that if we did that to them, they couldn't survive maybe people would stop the madness.
    And
If I was that woman's husband, she would get what's coming to her when she got home.

    MISDEMEANOR!?!?

Sheesh! I'm glad to report that people are supposedly getting sentences of hard time for animal cruelty out here - more than likely because of the link between animal abuse and child abuse, etc. You all have probaly heard about the case of Danielle VanDam - the little girl who was kidnapped, probably tortured, and murdered? I believe the increase in crimes of this nature has motivated the hard line against animal abusers in these parts. I haven't checked the news much the past few months so I can't state for a fact that prosecution is being carried out. It would seem to me that animal abuse should be viewed as criminal in itself, never mind where it leads to.

Unbelievable that people would do this . I would hope they ban Greyhound racing. Think of all the money they earn from the betting!!!! They should be forced to find homes for the dogs as a condition being given a license for racing and gambling with them. Is this how they treat retired racehorses!!! When I am able to have dogs in a few years my intent for a long time has been to rescue 2 greyhounds. The people whom I've met with them in my area have all been rescues and they all have been wonderful loving pets.
Everyone who supports the Greyhound tracks by betting should take an active role in seeing the animals are cared for .

    SICKOS!

GOOD LORD we live in a disgusting culture! There is a distinct link between animal cruelty and violent sex crime! When are people going to wake up? When is the judicial system going to realise that an animal is not "property," but a creature within its own right - a creature who feels affection, pain, love and abandonment just as keenly as us. When is the judicial system going to stop treating the victims as criminals and the criminals as victims?

    There is no justice.
