Am I the only one who's bothered by this? Animals being used, exploited and taken advantage off because silly humans are fighting and starting wars? And what stops someone on the other side of the war from shooting the sea lions?

I just think that's totally wrong, no matter what country does it.

Thanks for posting the link. Amazing what animals can do - and here they are helping to save lives.

It's a very interesting story. Hopefully, these sea lions will save a lot of lives. Obviously people have been taking wild animals and domesticating them for a very long time. I wonder if sea lions will become domesticated.

Ann, I understand your point completely, and felt that some people might have that reaction. But if you really read the article and realize how many lives could be saved, it seems that it is a reasonable practice. No, I don't want anything to happen to those sea lions. In fact, I hope their services won't even be necessary (wishful thinking on my part), but if they can help to save the lives of thousands of soldiers, I think the risk is worth it.

That might be the most unpopular response I've ever made on Pet Talk. I simply shared the information because I was amazed that the abilities of these wonderful animals.

I had mixed feelings about this, too. But I think, more than anything, my initial response was "how amazing it is that animals and humans can work so well together." Does anyone else wonder what it was like before animals learned to be afraid of man?
