    Getting over noise

Cincy is now taking a class for CGC/Therapy Dog and the only thing on the test that scares me is not running from a noise. Cincy is scared to death of the smallest things, sometimes and ignores others, sometimes too. Any suggestions how I can reliably get her to stay by my side when a book/pan or other object is dropped?

You can start out by taking small steps. Sit with her and lightly tap on a pot or pan with a wooden spoon. Occassionally make something bang in the house but when you do don't cuddle and run to her when she shows fear. Praise her when she doesn't show fear.

You can also work on her attention work in obedience. If she is hard at work focusing on you then when the noise happens and she sees you are ok with it, she will be too. Make sure you work the attention work in heal position. Do This is kind of like the security blanket position because she is close to mom's side.
When testing for the CGC stuff they usually let the dog remain in heal position.

Don't just focus on attention work in areas where it is quiet. You need to do it where there will be distractions. You actually need to create distractions. I have family members make distractions for the dogs when I am training. I also take them to places like PetsMart and work attention with distractions there. Your class is a good place but not the ideal place since dogs learn about going to class and that environment real fast.

I'm sure you can use your imagination to present Cincy with lot's of various noises to help her get use to it. The test itself is not that involved so don't sweat it. You should be fine!

Thanks for the ideas Candy! The noise thing is really the only part of the the that I am worried about. Since we have six weeks, I am sure we can get her ready though!

    Cincy'sMom,

I was waiting for Candy to advise you on this because Dixie's
been through the same test , I thought. I'm sure You and Cincy
will do Great. Have someone at home help with this problem
by providing the noise when you are practicing at home. I'm
not sure if Cincy will be "on leash" when you guys take the test
but if you are, try to be very relaxed yourself, so she doesn't
pick up on a movement in the leash line. I'm sure Cincy will do
well with practice. Go for it you guys !!!
