Announcing National Boycott Petland Week, June 22-30, 2001. Join Puppy Mill Fighters, IDA, IMOM, and many other grass-roots organizations in an effort to educate the public about the puppy mill - pet store connection.

June 22-30, 2001 will be a week of Petland and pet store protests, demonstrations, letter writing and campaigning! All groups are encouraged to join this national boycott that will kick off on Friday with protests throughout the United States. If you do not have a Petland store near you, please feel free to join us in boycotting and protesting all pet stores.

FACTS ABOUT PETLAND, PET STORES AND PUPPY MILLS

Petland is the nations largest pet store chain that sells puppies and kittens.
Petland purchases their animals from brokers such as the Hunte Corporation and Do Bo Tri Kennels.
These brokers buy their animals from puppy mills.
Puppy mills are commercial breeding facilities that only care about money.
Animals are in horrific conditions such as: crowded cages, stacked cages, wire floors, little or no food, unhealthy or no water, excessive breeding, health conditions that go untreated, genetic conditions that are ignored and puppies taken away from their mothers at as early as 4 weeks of age. These conditions lead to death on a regular basis. When the bitches can no longer breed, they are killed

Petland and its suppliers have been under investigation many times for numerous reasons, but you choose to ignore these situations and continue to sell animals out of greed. When the day comes that Petland only sells pet supply products, I will happily shop there. Until then, I will boycott all Petland stores, and I will tell all of my friends and family to do the same.

I agree with Ben E Gas, not all pet stores can be blamed for the practices of one chain.

Near my house are 2 PetSmarts and a Petco. PetSmart is our favorite place to go. People there are nice and our pets like that place. (Our dog didn't even mind his recent grooming, even though it involved a bath. )

Two cats that we have, we got from pet adoptions at PetSmart. The person we adopted one from even called later to see how she was doing. To me, that shows he cared about her well-being.

yeah, I would never buy a cat or dog from those places. The shelters have many needy animals that need homes and love.

I shop at Petsmart because they donate their space for shelters to come in and have adoption events. I will not shop at Petland because of their practices. I will send out a letter!

Petland is just a pure disgrace. PetsMart and Petco are not even in the same league. And like mentioned before, this is not a campaigne against all pet and pet supply stores. I live about a mile from the Petland in AZ. I have gone in there a few times just to see the dogs and cats in there. It makes me sick. I love looking at the little ones in there but it is so sad. The prices are completely outragious and chances are you will end up with a poor sick animal. I wish they would just go out of business. Even if they just went down to pet supplies I would never let them see a dime of my money.

I have seen the animals living in those tiny cages with mesh floors that their paws could fit thru and get stuck in and the cages were not very clean. It is very sad.

Please, if you ever get another dog, adopt one from a shelter or go to a reputable place like Petsmart. I just hope the dogs and cats that are unfortunate to end up in Petland remain healthy and find loving homes...SOON!

Please don't get her wrong, I should have specifeid her email, she is only talking about Petland and pet stores that get their animals from mills. She is not saying all pet stores. I love Pet Smart and shop there also.

Ben Im not saying don't buy pets from pet stores just know where the pet store got it from, I would hate myself if I knew that I had bought a puppy that came from a puppy mill and Im helping support that terrible bussness. The pet store in our town says they get their puppies from breeders but don't say who only that they came from Quebec. Quebec is where most of our puppy mills in Canada are. I don't even buy as much as a dog bone there, I shop at a pet supply store and everyonce in a while I will travel the hour and a half drive and treat my dog to Pet Smart.

I think in a perfect world there would be no "Petland" no "Pet Stores" and most importantly no "Puppie Mills". I agree that a national boycott of these places is a very good starting point, maybe a writing campaign to our elected officials would also help. I do feel sorry for the puppie mill pets who are already in these places now, what happens to them if someone doesn't take them?
