I counted up today - since I started this thread there have been 99 American troop deaths, 3 from Canada, and 16 from Great Britain.

That doesn't include the 4 Americans from today - their names haven't been posted yet on the DoD website

It is with great sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm that a British soldier from 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers died at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, Selly Oak, today, Tuesday 25 August 2009.


The soldier died from wounds he sustained in an explosion while on a foot patrol near Sangin in Helmand province on the evening of Saturday 15 August 2009.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel Nick Richardson, said:

"This fine British soldier made the ultimate sacrifice and his passing is mourned by the Task Force. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and comrades at this very sad time."

Next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before any further details are released.

I will add his name to this once it is released.

Fusilier Bush died of wounds he had sustained in Afghanistan. He had been taking part in a foot patrol in Sangin district, Helmand province, on Saturday 15 August when an explosive device detonated, killing his colleague Sergeant Simon Valentine.

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

2nd Lt. Joseph D. Fortin, 22, of St. Johnsbury, Vt., died Aug. 23 in Muhallah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

This is interesting - a Canadian serving in the U.S Army.

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Cpl. Darby T. Morin, 25, of Victoria, Canada, died Aug. 22 in Logar province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained during a vehicle rollover. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, N.Y.

Grace - just to add some specifics, Cpl Morin was from a reserve in Saskatchewan, and another soldier, Lyle Whitehead, died in a accident on the reserve itself.

A small First Nation reserve in northern Saskatchewan is grieving over an unlikely double tragedy — two soldiers from the Cree community who died in vehicle rollovers on the same day — 10,000 kilometres apart.

On Saturday, U.S. army Sgt. Darby Morin, 25, of Big River First Nation was killed when his vehicle rolled over while he was serving in Afghanistan.

Also on Saturday, Kyle Whitehead, 23, died when a car he was driving on the Saskatchewan reserve went into a ditch and rolled five to six times. Whitehead, a private in the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry of the Canadian Forces, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

The deaths have hit reserve residents hard. The community of about 2,200 is 190 kilometres north of Saskatoon.

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a Marine who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Lance Cpl. Donald J. Hogan, 20, of San Clemente, Calif., died Aug. 26 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.
