My exboyfriend's dog (a yellow lab) has been getting lots of flies bothering him lately. Any recommendations how to help this?
I'm wondering if the garlic & brewers yeast would work?
Thanks in advance.

no, fly-s... black flys? flies? sorry. how do you spell that!? geez... i'm on a good one here.
Manda,
I would check with the vet and see what you could do. I think they have bug spray for dogs. Has he been bathed with a sweet smelling shampool recently? Does he have a musky smell about him. I'm trying to think of all the things that might attract flies, those are about the only things I can think of.

Don't buy while shelter dogs die!!
Mugsy is right, also if he has any wounds that would attract flies too. If he does have wounds or is old I would keep a close eye on him as they can be harmful and can also lay maggots.
Soar high & free my sweet fur angels. I love you Nanook & Raustyk... forever & ever.
I dont know if it works with dogs, but if you rub a Bounce fabric softner on your skin, it keeps gnats, flies and misquitos away. Maybe it will work for your boyfriend's dog.
lvmymaltese, I did not know fabric sheets keep bugs away. I'll have to try that as they smell much better than those repellents do!

It's flies, not fleas!! I know that Brewer's yeast and garlic are supposed to help prevent fleas; not sure about fliews. We live by the ocean, and in the summer, the green flies can bite mercilessly, even our dogs. My Lab Star is not so much the target as our longer haired Cody, a Husky/Shep. This summer she got two wicked bites on her ears that took weeks to heal! Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions. Hope your Labbie friend gets some relief!!

yes the garlic works!!! my pom had flies buzzing around him once.i went to KROGER and got garlic pills. $4.00 give him one every day and in about three days they will be gone.
i have lots of friends that are breeders. if you are in need of a puppy let me know.
if you have a dog in need of a home let me know. i may take it.
They sell a cream for keeping flies off dogs. A lab will need it mostly on his ears. I think the name is 'Fly Off" and it comes in a jar. Check your local pet stores.
yeah the fabric softners work well especially with gnats. They were really bad here in Georgia this summer. It does leave you feeling and smelling so clean, I hate the smell of bug repellent especially Skin So Soft. I wasn't sure if it would work with flies though, worth a try.

P.S Vitain B-1 taken daily also keeps insects away, but I am not sure it is safe for animals, but great for humans.
