I used to have my heart set for owning big dogs, and only big dogs, until I adopted my 18 pound pug. Oh my gosh is she cute! I can hardly stand it! I am so much more open minded now about little dogs I just took her to a pet supplies store near me and bought her a little sweater You can't have a little dog without buying a sweater when winter comes And there's nothing better then putting her in the kitchen sink when she needs a bath, no back strain and oh, how easy! I still adore big dogs but my mind has opened to little dogs

Well I might as well put in my two cents worth. I have had only poodles but I have had them in all 3 sizes......toys (8-10 lbs), miniature (25 lbs) and a standard (45 lbs). As far as their personalities go, it made no difference. They were all sweet, loving and very intelligent. The only one that I couldn't hold in my lap was my standard. It was a shame too because she would try to sit in my lap but she just didn't fit!! I used to tell her that she was a toy in a standard's body!! I think I like small dogs the best for that reason. I love to cuddle them in my lap.

Most definitely small dogs! There are so many more benefits to small dogs over big dogs including but not exclusive to:

    * Small dogs generally live longer.
    * Small dogs cost less to feed.
    * Small dogs cost less at the Vet.
    * Small dogs are easier to transport.
    * Small dogs fit in your lap.
    * Small dogs leave less to clean up after.
    * Small dogs often have big dog
    personalities (lots 'o' fun!)
    * Small dogs are often welcome in places
where big dogs would be a hazard.
    * Small dogs are generally easier to manage.
    * Small dogs mature much faster.

Enough good reasons? I'm sure there are more that I haven't thought of. Any help out there?

For Sophie's Daddy.....I only have one more thought since you covered it so well.

They don't knock you over if they happen to jump up on you!

    I like big dogs because:
There's a lot more to love.
Strangers and burglers respect them more.
I don't have to bend down to pet them.
    Kids can't easily hurt them.
They keep my feet warm at night.
They can go for longer walks.
    They can defend themselves.
The hawks and coyotes in my neighborhood don't bother them.
    I don't need a garbage disposal.
    They have big hearts.

I know you're trying to be humorous but a well trained dog doesn't jump up on you.

You are correct there Rottie! My dogs went through obedience classes and were trained to not jump on people but when I visit other people's houses that is often a different story. One training tip that we learned to teach the "no jumping" behavior is to bend your knee as the dog is coming toward you. Soon they will get the point that a bent knee doesn't allow them to bounce off you quite the way they wanted to! Anyway, it works.

Normal size, proper dog size, O.K. if pushed bigger dogs work for me.
Don't get me wrong I have met countless small dogs with lovely personalities and even some with really nice owners too! But I'm afraid there is still just too many people out there that refuse to believe that their over indulged hairballs are or ever could be dogs! Harsh, I know, but it gets me mad!! Sorry to all you lovely people who have trained and fed your small canines with care and dedication, I know you do exist.
