I don't shop at PETCO, but for those of you who do... this is from today's online Chicago Tribune. I also heard it on news radio.

Pet food stored in filthy conditions seized at Petco hub in Joliet

Federal marshals Thursday confiscated pet food at Petco's distribution center in Joliet after U.S. Food and Drug Administration inspectors found the food was stored in unsanitary conditions.

FDA employees discovered "widespread and active rodent and bird infestation" where packaged food was stored in April and May, an FDA news release stated.

"[The] FDA has no reports of pet illness or death associated with consumption of animal food distributed by Petco and does not have evidence that the food is unsafe for animals," it said.

Kevin Whelan, a Petco spokesman, said after the FDA inspection in May, the company "acted aggressively to address any concerns that were raised."

Thank goodness I don't shop at Petco. I prefer PetSmart. Even the Petco in my town always seemed a little icky to me and it's much smaller than PetSmart.
