Do you believe there is such a thing as "moral" anger?

I recently read an article by a local writer who usually
writes a columm on everyday life with a young growing
family.It's usually a light-hearted look at life. This article
however deals with a serious social problem. I wish more
people would read it maybe become angry enough to push
all lawmakers to enact Seriously Severe sentences for some
particularly horrific crimes against children (and animals),
the most trusting & vulnerable souls on earth.

I'm sorry, but I didn't really agree with it. I am greatly against the death penalty and I think the writers ideas of having a jury of war-vetarans and so on was just flawed because they would judge before they even heard the whole story, not even allowing a moment of doubt that "hey, maybe this guy is innocent". And for the writer to sit there and say that single moms shouldn't move in with a boyfriend unless he will marry her because that means he will beat her kids was just a very stupid comment IMHO.

But yes, I would like to see harder punishments for people who abuse animals, making them pay some money really doesn't do anything. Atleast people who abuse children go to jail.

Liz, I think that article was well written and very precise. I agree that the laws should be more strict. I come from a place where the laws and the punishments criminals receive are horrible. People think twice before they commit a crime.

Ann, our laws always presume you are innocent until proved guilty. But once you are found guilty, the punishment is not as severe as it should. The prisons here are almost like a hotel! Where I come from, the prisons are not even fit for rats and that too makes people think twice.

When you molest a child, kill a person, etc... No matter what the rest of your story is, there is no acceptable excuse for your actions.

While I think that anger can be valuable, and channeled productively, there's a line that has to be drawn. We have systems, courts, and basic reason to temper our urges for revenge. That's why we seek justice, not revenge.

It's an interesting article, but a very slippery slope. Human rights apply to everyone. Humans make mistakes, and who are we to dispense the 'ultimate justice' and who wants to live in a world where we are motivated not out of understanding about what right and wrong is, but simply by fear? It sounds like a police state to me. We might as well live in the stone age if we want to be ruled by our outrage at every turn. Very good food for thought, though.

HERE IN ENGLAND THERE IS A SEARCH GOING ON FOR TWO 10 YEAR OLD GIRLS WHO WENT MISSING 12 DAYS AGO - CAN ANY OF US COMPREHEND WHAT THOSE PARENTS ARE GOING THROUGH - AND YES LETS THINK OF IT - WHAT THOSE TWO LITTLE GIRLS ARE GOING THROUGH. I am against the death penalty for I do not think man has the right to take another man's life. I do however, think that there should be strickter punishment for criminals.

Thanks for posting Liz. I'm not in favor of the death penalty either but, when it comes to hurting and molesting children no punishment is hard enough. Not sitting around watching tv/reading everyday or sleeping.

I think that as for single moms a few women (notice I said a few)subject their children to very risky situations by putting their love life ahead of their children if only for short time. But I also don't think that children need to fear every male figure either.

This should explain my stance on those who commit crimes against those who aren't able to protect themselves:

I have 2 Doberman Pinschers. If I ever caught anyone mistreating them in any way shape or form I would commit extreme bodily harm to that person without explanation or warning. While my Dobermans can protect themselves they are very friendly and trusting.

I am in favor of the most severe punishments to those who are CONVICTED of commiting crimes against children. Furthermore, I am also in favor of the most severe punishments to those who are CONVICTED of commiting crimes against adults. In this instance of the word "crimes" I am referring to the type of crimes that inflict bodily harm or psychological harm to those who cannot protect themselves. These types of criminals that I am referring to are child molestors, murderers, rapists and purveyors of child pornography and of course terrorists.

For those who might wonder what I mean by "severe punishment"? Extreme living conditions followed by agonizing torture followed by a slow suffering death.

Seem harsh? Seem crazy? Seem unjust? Do you want to eradicate these types of crimes from society or not?

BTW, Buddy is a beautiful pooch!

I completely agree with that article. I don't consider myself educated or all that smart but I do remember when things were not like they are today. Kids could even go out after dark and play hide and seek and kick the can. Today they can't even walk to school by themselves, let alone be safe at school. They can't walk to the store. We walked our Grandson to school for six years back and forth because his parents worked and they were afraid to let him go by himself.
When do we take a stand? How far will it go? It started with animal abuse and has progressed to child abuse. Most people like that don't understand rehabilatation, if they go to jail they have three meals a day and a warm bed. These children are gone forever.
Stop and think, if your child were murdered and abused do you really think jail time would be enough of a punishment? Do you really think they would be rehabilitated or spend time in jail and come out and do the same thing over again?
I think it's time to really establish a punishment that would deter these people, that they would know they would get the ultimate punishment society can give, not in twelve years but when they are convicted.

Yesterday in Columbus, Ohio, police shot a man who had just robbed a fast food establishment. The man "reportedly" aimed a gun at 5 police officers.

The man had just gotten out of prison after doing 12 years for?

You guessed it, robbery!

Every person is entitled to their opinion, of course.

I think these problems are nothing new. Treatment of animals and humans throughout the world has always been an issue. Look at history from all points of the planet! We can never cure the problems of the world, only effect them. I do my best and that is all you can do.

My first thought for helping out would be to educate folks. From day one..... but who would take that on?

Secondly I would make mental health services FREE. Half of these people have mental problems and have never been treated. I am a real 'free services for mental health" advocate - and think all of us could use a few healthy hours talking to an expert about our issues from time to time. It is so expensive that many cannot afford it. Insurance coverage is horrible in the US for mental health.

Education, education, education.

Volunteer, volunteer, volunteer.

Get invovled! I know I am preaching to the choir here! Many folks here are already dealing with their pets and children in a top notch way, but we can always kick it up a notch and share our experience and feelings with thoses who are uninformed...volunteer at your local shelter...for kids and/or for pets!

Children and animals are two of the most vulnerable creatures on this earth. The unfortunate part is that's where it all begins. Look at Jeffrey Dahlmer...he started with kittens in his grandmother's basement. Need I say more??

The laws in this country have loop holes that make the whole judicial system look like swiss cheese. They are made for the criminals. It's time that those laws were changed, as the damage has been done and will continue to be done until they are changed.

HSUS did a study of animal abusers in this country. It is a FACT that people who begin with animals always end up hurting humans. And...sorry guys, but the it also states that 95% of those abusers are male. That is NOT to say that there aren't women abusers out there as well. We've got one right here in Connecticut.

I would die rather than let anyone hurt my daughter or my fur family. And it has become a sad day when ANYONE can just come right into your house, take your child and leave. It is pretty obvious that animal abuse and child offenses are totally out of control in this country. And rather than doing their jobs, politicians are sitting around collecting outrageous salaries vetoing the very laws that need changing. Those except for raises in their already high salaries.

Change the laws or the politicians. Protect the children and animals.
