My surgery is on Thursday afternoon at 4:30 and I was instructed to begin a clear liquid diet today. As of 5:30 pm, I have ingested only 705 calories. I have never before in my life not eaten and have learned some interesting things:
* Fruit juices have A LOT more calories in them than you think! Check the labels. If you're trying to lose weight, cut out fruit juice from your diet.
* Don't stray far from a bathroom. You will have to pee a ridiculous number of times during the day. I've already given up on wearing shorts today. I might just ditch the undies tomorrow too.
* The beginning of the day was the worst, as yesterday's solids worked their way out and weren't being replaced by any new solids.
* You don't get quite as hungry as you think you will. I mean, don't get me wrong -- you're hungry -- but it's not agony.
* Microwaved chicken broth isn't half bad -- even better, it fills you up better than anything else on the menu. It tastes better than it smells.
* Putting lemonade in iced tea isn't the same as putting lemon juice and Splenda in iced tea. It's more tart and less sweet.
* You don't realize until you can't eat how many times during the day you think about food!
For the record, my diet today and tomorrow is limited to: water, coffee, tea, soda, clear juices (like white cranberry juice, white grape juice, apple juice, grapefruit juice, etc.), chicken or beef broth, popsicles (not red), italian ice (not red), jello (without fruit), salt, pepper & sugar. Not allowed is: milk, cream, milkshakes, orange juice, tomato juice, any soup other than clear broth, oatmeal/cream of wheat, and obviously any solid food.
Can't wait to see if I'll be able to sleep through the night tonight. At this rate, I think I'll be too hungry, so will have to get up for snacks during the night. By Thursday afternoon, I ought to be good and cranky for the hospital staff!
